MWIRD’s relief response

Monday, February 1st, 2010

January 29th, 2010. MWIRD’s relief response effort continues.

On Wednesday January, 20th, seven days after the operation was launched, a truck donated by Professional Shipping, Inc. a Highbridge business and neighbor of MWIRD arrived at the MWIRD office to collect the Haiti Earthquake Disaster Response donations collected. These donations will be added to those collected by Fundación Kysbel, a faith-based foundation based in Washington Heights at  610 West 175 Street and shipped to Haiti by the end of this week, in a shipping container donated by Professional Shipping, Inc. It is good when northern Highbridge comes together to act in service of Humanity.

On Friday January 29th, 2010 a twenty feet shipping container left from Amsterdam Avenue (bet. 108 and 109 Street) to the port of San Souci in the Dominican Republic. MWIRD worked with Border Health Trip to DR/Haiti/Jornada de Salud Fronteriza and Professional Shipping, Inc to make this happen.

The container included: 153 boxes (47 food, 52 clothes, 4 cases pedisures, 3 medicines/medical supplies, 18 adults pampers, 5 children pampers, 8 sanitary napkins, 5 shoes, 3 toys,  3 condoms, 4 water, 2 personal hygiene, 3 of medical supplies and clothes)

3 luggage with clothes                                        6 beds (1 hospital bed, 5  household bed)
3 big red bags with shoes and clothes                25 crutches
6 gallons of oil                                                  16 walkers
10 bag 15-25 pounds of rice                             15 canes
50 cases of water                                             3 wheelchairs

We at MWIRD take this time to thank each of you, on behalf of the Haitian people, that have made donations to the Haiti Earthquake Relief Response effort in any way. Each donation is valued and appreciated. Our gratitude to the shipping companies that have donated space on containers and waived fees on relief supplies and donations to get aid on the ground in the affected areas in Haiti.

NORTHERN HIGHBRIDGE COORDINATES AN EFFECTIVE HAITI EARTHQUAKE RESPONSE

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

Haiti 1Less than 24 hours after the devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti, the Muslim Women’s Institute for Research and Development — a Bronx-based community service organization — launched a united community response to the disaster. This included setting up the “Haiti Earthquake Disaster Response” bank account at CHASE to receive monetary donations. In the days following, MWIRD offices were converted to a veritable food bank and received donations of food, clothing and emergency supplies. The donations received were sorted, boxed and labeled by community volunteers who worked through the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day week-end.

Seven days after the operation was launched, a truck donated by Professional Shipping, Inc., a Highbridge business and neighbor of MWIRD, collected more than 75 boxes all donated by residents of the Highbridge community, many of whom are unable to give cash but needed to respond to the disaster by giving whatever they can. The donations collected from the MWIRD offices will be combined with those collected by Fundación Kysbel, a faith-based foundation based in Washington Heights and shipped to Haiti. The shipping container was also donated by Professional Shipping, Inc.  This response effort has received the full support and endorsement of New York City Councilwoman Helen D. Foster.Haiti 1

As relief efforts continue, those wishing to make cash donation can do so by contacting MWIRD. For further information call 718-960-2262.

U R G E N T

As the response efforts to the devastating earthquake in Haiti approaches 48 hours, the Muslim Women’s Institute for Research and Development, leading relief efforts in the Bronx is operating, as a drop off site.

MWIRD is accepting non-perishable, ready to eat food items – tuna pouches, crackers, energy bars and other shelf stable food items; general supplies – first-aids items, personal hygiene items, medical supplies;  and other goods – blankets, towels, new underwear and clean clothing in good condition.  Anyone wanting to donate to the relief efforts may do so by bringing their donations to the MWIRD office at 1363 Ogden Avenue at 170th Street in the Highbridge section of the Bronx or calling the office at 718-960-2262.  A Bank account ‘HAITI EARTHQUAKE RESPONSE’ has been set-up, please contact MWIRD for more information.

On Saturday January 16th, 2010 the office will be open from 10AM to 6PM to receive donations. MWIRD is collaborating with the Greater Haitian community of New York City as it coordinates efforts to get all donated goods to Haiti as soon as possible. Another partner in this effort is Islamic Relief, an international relief organization that is coordinating an air-lift to Haiti within the next week. MWIRD is working with Islamic Relief to ensure the donations collected through these efforts are part of the first air-lift.

Commenting on the devastation that is ongoing in Haiti as a result of the January 12th earthquake, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said, “Haiti has moved to center of the world’s thoughts and the world’s compassion,” and we all agree with him.

MWIRD stands in total solidarity and support of the people of Haiti, in what seems to be their darkest hour, leading this effort as a key organization of the Muslim Community’s response to the present devastation on the island.
