THE STORY OF MUSLIM WOMEN’s INSTITUTE FOR RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT

Wednesday, December 14th, 2011

Imagine if you were Santa Claus or a miracle maker?
Do you know anyone who could donate $50,000 in three weeks to save a
wonderful organization in the Bronx who worked with community
tirelessly for years? Or do you know 10 people who could donate $5000
each.  Or do you know 50 people who could give a $1000, and make a
difference in the lives of those who are often forgotten by the world.
Or do you know 100 people who could give $500 each; or should we go
for 1000 people who could donate $50 each?
By raising this money The Muslim Women’s Institute for Research &
Development could continue to keep their PANTRY doors open where
thousands of people get fed.

Imagine in this cold winter on the holiday season when we strive to
celebrate and dream about a new year filled with gifts, and hopes.
There are people out there whose dream is to have one meal a day.
Imagine if we chose to make a gift for one of these souls and provide
a meal for a holiday season? If each one of us would only share a
meal, there will be no hungry people in the richest country in the
world.

THE MWIRD is reaching out to all of us for help. They only have three
weeks to raise $50,000 or close their doors forever.
Now you can imagine the people’s faces who for years went to MWIRD’s
doors for food, and whose volunteers spent countless hours feeding the
hungry, imagine if they find doors closed where can they turn to on
this cold winter?

Dear friends, we all can make a difference. We elected President Obama
by $5 donations; why can’t we
Provide a meal for a person in need.
We are torn by doubts who is good and who is not, and here are Muslim
women who have been trying to serve the Bronx community for years
being invisible and working without ever asking for acknowledgement,
now they are shedding tears before these crisis and sadness of closing
their doors before the needy ones forever. They served regardless of
race, religion, ethnicity, gender or sex…THEY SERVED those in need.
Imagine if we could be the catalyst for change and make it happen.
Imagine if Santa was real and that  we like him all could deliver this
gift of hope?

Nurah Ama’tullah, Executive Director, Muslim Women’s Institute for Research and Development, and her intern, Sarah Abdullah.  A community group that feeds more than 10,000 people in the Bronx through two food pantries plans to shut its doors at the end of the year. The Muslim Women’s Inistitute for Research and Development has been distributing halal groceries to needy Bronxites since 1997. The tough economy has shrunk donations at the same time that residents’ need is surging, says Executive Director Nurah Ama’tullah.“When investments took a dive, the first thing they (Foundations) cut was philanthropic giving,” said Ama’tullah.

Meanwhile, “The Bronx is the hungriest borough in the city.”A 70% slump in donations and a more than 50% increase in demand for services this year has put the organization $48,000 in the hole, Ama’tullah said. Unless a sudden flood of donations can bridge the gap, the food pantries in Highbridge and Parkchester will close on Dec. 31.

“This is very important for me,” said Antonia Cruz, 52, an out-of-work mother of five. “The food is very good. I don’t have public assistance. I hope they don’t close.”

The group’s five employees–Ama’tullah, three other administrators and a pantry manager–have been working without pay since Memorial Day, she said, adding that while volunteers help keep the pantries running, some issues have to be handled by paid staff. “Every position that you need in a supermarket is required for a food pantry,” Ama’tullah said.

Triada Stampas, director of government relations and public education for The Food Bank for New York City, which supplies food to MWIRD, said the group is facing the same problem as many other pantries and soup kitchens citywide. “Their operating expenses really became insupportable within their budget, which is a tragic situation, Stampas said. “They’ve been a really good partner that has met real needs in their community. We’re really sad to see them go.”

The New York Women’s Foundation’s support of the group will ended in 2009-10, after five years. The Union Square Awards helped fund MWIRD in the past, but its spokesperson said they focus on emerging organizations and typically limit funding to 10 years.

Though U.S. Rep Jose Serrano earmarked $100,000 for the group in 2010, no federal dollars made it to MWIRD’s coffers, a Serrano spokesman confirmed.

You can help support MWIRD by setting up your place of employment with pre-tax payroll giving.

Easy steps:

1)      How payroll giving works.
Employees can donate as much or as little as they want through their institution specific payroll system.

2)      Advantages of pay roll giving.
MWIRD benefits because they get regular donations to help in their daily operations.

3)      Endorse MWIRD.
If MWIRD does not exist as a nominated charity, then as a MWIRD supporter you can go through the endorsement process to nominate MWIRD.  It is up to you as an employee at your given place of work to nominate MWIRD.

4)      Records to keep for tax deduction.
Typically there are not additional tax forms that need to be filled out.  Your pre-tax deductions will be found on your government issued W-2 form.

5)      Call your Human Resource Department today to start the endorsement process.

Financial Crisis

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011

In January & February we informed you of the financial crisis MWIRD was experiencing:  closing 2010 with a $25,000 gap; furloughing staff in January; and the pending closure of the food poverty programs – the two halal food pantries MWIRD operates in the Bronx.

Things have improved:  the programs are still in operation (alhamduillah), serving over 10,000 people each month; during February and March $2,744 was raised; and the $Change for Change campaign was launched.

On Saturday March 19th, 2011 a few families in central New Jersey hosted a benefit event for MWIRD. One hundred and fifteen adults and children attended the event which raised $10,145. The funds raised will cover the costs for the hunger relief programs for two and a half months – through the end of May 2011.

We kindly ask that you continue to make donations to support MWIRD and its work. We need to raise another $40,000 to sustain the food program through the end of 2011.

Thank you.

BRONX FOOD PANTRIES, OPERATED BY MWIRD, FACE CLOSURE

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

Please give $20. It’s the cost of attending a well organized and important event. The event happens three times a week in the Bronx at the Benedict Avenue Community Food Pantry and the Community Food Pantry @ Higbridge. It’s such a successful event that more than 5000 people usually attend each month. It’s not the kind of event you have to get dressed up for. Often times, people come under-dressed, they wear other people’s donated clothing. They don’t arrive by cab, car or even bus– most walk there because the cost of transportation just might prevent them from attending. Yet, it is the most enthusiastic crowd. Patient, good people who always say thank you with a smile when their turn to take the stage at the event occurs. Best yet, the event is always free and no one leaves empty handed. More importantly, after attending this event, no one has to go to bed hungry.

If you give MWIRD a gift of $20 to help meet the cost of this week’s big event, we know your sacrifice of the movie you won’t attend, that book or CD you might not buy, that night you’d otherwise eat out or splurge on something that you could do without in order to help someone without food eat for a few days will feel really good. You can show up too if you’d like, to give a hand, shake a hand, pack a bag and share some smiles.

The event has been laid out. Now this is the cold hard facts! MWIRD shut the doors of its Hunger Relief programs on Friday, January 28th 2011, having laid of the small staff required to operate the pantry on January 21st 2011. After 13 plus years of operating weekly– it doesn’t seem real. A few people were notified of our not so good news. One asked about all of those people who will be looking for us and who will otherwise be hungry this week.

Can you help us find the answer to how we can continue to do this work by providing your help at this, our most critical hour? If you can, and we pray that you can, please go to our Paypal account at www.mwird.org and spend $20 dollars, sacrifice $20 this week, TODAY, so the event we have held continuously for thousands of Bronxities and New Yorkers does not come to this abrupt and disappointing end.

We know this is the 11th hour, but when we think of the plights of those we strive to serve — we CANNOT help but do ALL that we can, and so we are providing this appeal to YOU! Please ACT on it. Please share this URGENT APPEAL with all you know.

If any are desirous to spend more, please do not hesitate to do so. All gifts (donations) will be acknowledged.
